Rooftop Rain Water Harvesting Structure at our Campus

It is high time now to fall for surface water usage instead of going for ground water resources to meet human needs. Rainwater harvesting is an important environment friendly approach, dubbed as a Green Practice, having double benefit, in keeping the groundwater table undisturbed and charging the aquifer. The increasing urbanization led to concentrated population density at places resulting into uneven drawing of ground water. This is ensuing into draught and drying up of river beds at places where domestic and industrial use of water is rising. This shift of the focus, towards using rainwater, the groundwater may gradually fall back to its normal level thus ensuring the eco-balance. As an initiative for the same the Agriculture Engineering department of Gandhi Institute For Technology, Bhubaneswar has successfully installed a Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting System in the main building on 18th of January, 2022. The event took place in the presence of Er. Susant Kishore Pattanaik Executive Director, Ground Water Survey and Investigation (GWS&I), Govt. of Odisha, Unit-8, Bhubaneswar, Principal, Dr. Ch V S Parameswara Rao, GIFT, BBSR, Dr. Satyananda Swain, Head AGE Dept., Gayatri Mohanty, Assistant Professor, AGE dept. and Sushree Monali, Assistant Professor, AGE dept. in association with a few student volunteers namely Truptimayee Dash, Priyanka Choudhury, Sourav Ranjan Mohapatra of 7th and 8th semester of Agril. Department. The collection depends on several considerations. Collection efficiencies of 80% are often used depending on the specific design. The roof run off water will be collected through a pipe line network and stored in a recharge pit (diameter of 5ft. and depth 10 ft.) nearby. This will definitely help the increase in the level of ground water.
