CONFIDENCE NOT OVER-CONFIDENCE AND SHEER SUBMISSION ARE KEY TO
SUCCESS IN LIFE
From time immemorial all the schools, thoughts and philosophies of education and training revolve round practice, patience, perseverance, punctuality, politeness as key characteristics to achieve success in life. Apart from these qualities two more basic and important qualities which are also widely accepted to be a part of any student’s character, all around the world are confidence and submission. Without these two basic instincts, a student’s persona is not full blown. A blend of practice, patience, perseverance, punctuality, politeness with confidence and submission makes a perfect human being with no or less flaws & helps in the overall development of a man’s personality. Total submission of a subject or student to his guru or teacher helps in his empowerment and inculcation of positive vibes in his way of learning and subsequently also makes him confident. A confident person is strong enough to judge his potentials & overcome his lacunas to be self sufficient gradually. But as rightly said, excess of anything is fatal, the proverb “Overconfidence leads to death” suits aptly. To make the point clear, a short story is cited below to show the significance of confidence and submission in a student’s life:
Once a monk and disciple were on a voyage. On their way, they decided to visit a village near a foothill surrounded by a river. So they alighted near the banks of the river but finding no means to cross the river, the disciple asked his master, how they will cross the river. The monk having achieved certain divine powers said that you wait here and I will first cross the river walking above the water of the river and arrange something for you to cross. The monk crossed the river, as said and looked back to see that his disciple with folded hands and eyes closed is also crossing the river like him. As both of them crossed the river, the monk was curious to know about his disciple’s adventure and enquired. The disciple politely replied that with sheer submission on him (the monk) and with the confidence that he will surely save him, he was able to do the feat. The monk became elated. On seeing the miraculous feat of the duo, the villagers greeted them with prostrate and invited for their annual function in the evening where in every one will gather around a huge divine fire to seek the blessings of the supreme lord. The monk was so charmed and elated by his student’s feat, that he became overconfident of his divine powers and to show off his powers & supremacy, in pride he declared that he will enter the holy fire and come out unscathed. He thought if his disciple can cross the river by merely chanting his name, then he can definitely complete the feat. He became overconfident. Despite his disciples warning and request not to do the same, he entered the fire and was burnt to death.
The story shows that, the submission and confidence of the disciple on his guru and self helped him achieve success in his action and the overconfidence of the monk lead to his death.
Hence it is imperative to mention here that, a student should lead a life of simplicity and inculcate practice, patience, perseverance, punctuality, politeness in his day to day life. Also he should have confidence in his own potentials to achieve the goals in his career. He should also show complete submission to his teachers, so that their aura is filled with positivity and the flow of knowledge is not hindered. If any student slowly and gradually imbibes all these qualities in him, he will surely achieve the desired results in his life.
